so. i have about 1700 pages to read this week. well, i read some yesterday, so maybe more like 1500. literally. so forgive me if this week is sorta light on content here.

let's see. yesterday, while driving out of the randall's parking lot, i passed a car with a ktru sticker that read "orgo goddess." two things for those of you unfamiliar with ricespeak. ktru is the campus radio station. they make bumper stickers that say ktru 91.7, rice radio. people cut them up and spell out whatever they would like to spell. like "orgo goddess." orgo is short for organic chemistry. and if there is a term that should never be appended to orgo, it is goddess. could i think of a more blatant oxymoron? no. i can only hope that the owner of this vehicle was the victim of a drive-by stickering or something and she doesn't know what's stuck on her bumper. orgo goddess. really.

we have a problem with one of our fishes. he has lost the ability to swim upright. it's very interesting to watch. he's swimming on his side now. sometimes he goes nuts and starts doing barrel rolls at the bottom of the tank. sometimes he zips up to the surface and plummets back down to the gravel. sometimes he does these little loop-de-loops that bring him through vertical in the middle, and i get excited because i'm thinking, ooh! he'll remember once he feels what upright is. but he doesn't stay there. goes right back to sideways swimming. angie and i have come up with a number of theories to explain this erratic behavior. i think my favorite was when we decided that he was just an attention whore. but it's really not working, because he's become the pariah of the tank now. apparently the other fishes are not down with sideways swimming. they no longer fraternize with him. man, he's so gonna be dead sometime soon. i just wish his death throes weren't a week long. we discussed taking him out of the tank and shaking him. i don't know exactly why that would help, but we both came up with that idea independently of one another. we also discussed the possibility of his being one creative and especially unique fish. he's bending all the known fish rules. who says you have to swim upright? no one. so he's going to be a trailblazer and turn the whole world of fish swimming orientation upside down. like i said, though, the rest of the fishes don't seem to buy into this new sideways swimming thing. angie spent some time considering the possibility of damage to one side of his brain, but in the end, he was moving fins on both sides of his body and she concluded that fish don't have hemispheres, anyway. our best guess is that he just ran into the wall or something and suffered some kind of brain damage. i still think it means he's about to die, though.
