one of the most perfect things is just the right note on a bass guitar at just the right volume. when you breathe you can feel it vibrating in your throat. when you close your eyes you can see it behind your eyelids. it can effect a sort of transformation, you sitting in your chair, swallowing the sound, the sound swallowing you. sometimes it doesn't even matter what the rest of the band is doing because it's that bass guitar that's pinning you to the floor. and then maybe the bass drops out for a second and it's like falling, and then there's the drums, holding you up, and then rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and then the vocals are sorta floating on top of everything if all of their amps are at the right level and it's just...yeah. music, you know.

it's more pleasant to let something like music swallow you than the normal dark sort of sadness that i'm used to. the music is still dark, though. dark and heavy and slow. but there are things heavy and slow and sweet, like honey, and it's not a bad thing, the weight of it on me. it hangs in the air, the sound, after it's gone, oh, you know it's particles in motion, blah, blah, blah, but if you squint, you can see it, a vague character, wings outspread, trembling. one of the problems with science is that it often makes things less fun. one of the other problems is that the field uses too many z's and x's. i mean, i'm just saying. i haven't got anything against science. really.

today's the summer solstice. happy summer solstice.

kate bush's 'this woman's work' is prominently featured in she's having a baby, starring kevin bacon, and um, other people.
