new pics. i'm falling behind on my emailing. well, i suppose that's only happening now because i was gone all weekend in punta umbra. i'll catch up later. punta umbra is in huelva. it has a lovely beach. the spaniards go there and it's not a tourist town at all. perhaps because there's nothing but the beach there. no discotecas, no clubs, no anything really but a few restaurants and a few bars and ok, maybe a few clubs but nothing special. that's why we went though. we were maybe the only foreigners in the entire town. it was lovely. just a series of impressions. rain and a warm warm bed and then another blanket in the middle of the night and a water heater but no hot water only water that isn't freezing cold. lying in bed listening to the rain on the roof and sinking into the dark around us and then looking at my watch and turning it upside down and thinking, ok, it's either 9:15 or 3:45 and neither would surprise me. 9:15. breakfast in the rain and then walking in the rain and then shopping in the rain and what else, i don't know, but in the rain. then we found grammy and granpa and somewhere to put our things with a blue blanket striped like the sky and then a brown and orange and green blanket striped like something else entirely. went out again. ate lunch on a bench while we watched the clouds of smoke from the factories join the clouds of cloud in the sky and it was so difficult almost impossible to tell between the two unless your eyes slid downwards to the spout of the chimney and the smoke pouring out of the chimney and then you would know that it wasn't a cloud cloud at all. bought necklaces with fishes, one black, one blue, the black one is for me and the blue one is for heidi, oh, together we are black and blue, is that supposed to mean something? i can't say. then what. oh yes. down to the beach and the restaurante miramar, the only restaurante on the beach that stays open all year and the best swordfish and the best merluza in salsa verde, oh, the best fish we've ever tasted and the best orange juice and we love punta umbra, we really do. sat on the beach and watched clouds fly by. sat on the beach hoping for sunshine. slept. woke up. lifted the curtain with tentative fingers and it looked like there was sun through the curtain slats so then i pulled up the curtain and it was beautiful and sunny and we said goodbye to grammy and granpa and we could tell that they loved us and would miss us terribly but we had to go. ate breakfast. shooed flies. went to the beach. lovely. fell into the sound of the ocean and the feel of the sand and the warm-cool breeze on our skin. it's like this, you turn your head right and left and all you can see is beach because that's all there is to see and it's just overwhelming and there's nothing but sand and water and no huts selling pepsi, no shacks selling postcards, no people rolling their igloos up and down the beach selling beer. and every time i tried to write it i couldn't do it and every time i tried to say it all i could come up with was 'awesome' and that wasn't it, well, it was, it was awesome, but that wasn't the word and so i put some pictures up but there's really no way you're going to understand because you weren't there and i suppose that's just the sort of thing we have to live with sometimes.
