he was holding a sign that said he was hungry, food would be wonderful, money would be great, anything would help, even a quarter. it said he hadn't eaten for two days. it said he was hungry and i thought about the word and what it could mean. what is hunger? hunger is longing, hunger is emptiness, hunger is pain. we move forward in time and hunger is desperation, fear, death.
you're lucky, though, i thought, that your hunger is so easily satisfied, a hamburger from mcdonald's, free samples at the farmer's market, a burrito at the cheap mexican place down the street. it's a hunger with a name, with a purpose. with a solution.
i sat there watching him and i knew his was not an enviable situation. still, i can't help wishing that my solutions were as easy to find. i'm so very hungry and i don't know what for.
